Fees management
Fee management allows you to configure Fees for payments and payouts at the Payment method and Payout method levels. It provides a centralised way to define default Fees, create more specific Fee configurations, and adapt Fees to different currencies and transaction types.
Fee configuration supports two levels of flexibility: Base fees, which define the default Fee structure, and Custom Fee rules, which allow more specific configurations based on defined conditions.
What is Fee management?
Fee management is a set of tools for configuring how Fees are applied to transactions processed through a Payment or Payout method.
Fees can be configured for different transaction entities depending on the Method type:
- Payment methods: Payment, Refund, and Chargeback.
- Payout methods: Payout.
Fee configuration is available on the Fees tab of the corresponding Method.
The Base fee defines the default Fee configuration. When more specific requirements apply, Custom Fee rules can be used to configure alternative Fees for transactions matching particular conditions.
Fee availability is controlled at the Method level. When Fee availability is disabled, no Fee configuration or Custom Fee rules can be created for the Method.
How it works?
Fee configuration follows a method-based approach based on:
- Fees tab of a Payment or Payout method.
- Fee availability: activates Fee configuration.
- Base Fee: includes Simple rate-only fees or Advanced multi-currency fees.
- Custom Fee rules: additional Fee conditions.
A Custom Fee rule overrides the Simple rate-only or Advanced multi-currency fee configuration when its specific conditions are met. However, Custom Fee rules cannot exist independently: a Base fee configuration is always required as a fallback when no Custom Fee rule applies.
- When a transaction is processed through the Method, the applicable Fee configuration is used to calculate the Fee.
Simple rate-only fees
Simple rate-only fees provide a basic Fee configuration based on a percentage rate.
For Payment methods, separate rates can be configured for:
- Payment
- Refund
- Chargeback
For Payout methods, a Payout rate can be configured.
Advanced multi-currency fees
Advanced multi-currency fees provide more detailed control over Fees.
The configuration is organised by the active Base currencies of the Payment scheme. Each currency can have its own Fee configuration.
An Advanced fee configuration can include:
- Rate: the percentage-based part of the Fee.
- Fixed: a fixed amount added to the Fee.
- Min: the minimum Fee amount.
- Max: the maximum Fee amount.
This allows Fee structures to vary by currency and transaction entity.
Base fee vs Custom Fee rules
Base Fee and Custom Fee rules serve different purposes within Fee management.

The Base fee provides the default configuration, while Custom Fee rules allow the default behaviour to be adapted for specific cases.
Fees for payments and payouts: main difference
Fee configuration follows the same general approach for Payment and Payout methods, but the transaction entities available for configuration are different.
Payment methods
Payment method fees cover the payment lifecycle and can be configured for:
- Payment
- Refund
- Chargeback
In Simple rate-only mode, each entity has its own Rate. In Advanced multi-currency mode, each entity can have Rate, Fixed, Min, and Max values configured for each active Base currency.
Payout methods
Payout method fees apply only to:
- Payout
Refunds and Chargebacks are not applicable to the payout flow. Therefore, the fee configuration for Payout methods contains only payout-related parameters.
In Simple rate-only mode, the configuration contains a Payout rate. In Advanced multi-currency mode, each active Base currency can have its own Payout fee with Rate, Fixed, Min, and Max values.
